He looked physically all right from a distance, maybe a little malnourished, but he was able to wander through the village without help. Except he kept stopping and looking around, as if he was unable to recall where exactly he was.]

It probably has to do with that. I heard a few people were taken away against their will. Others stepped through a blue looking portal and vanished too.
